Wellness Wednesday: "Everything in Moderation...Including Moderation"

Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh, the Holidays. I love them. This is one of my favorite times of the year. I’m not going to lie, one of the reasons is the food: the chocolate, the wine, tamales, turkey, stuffing, ham, potatoes, breads of all kinds, and all manner of creamy, savory deliciousness. The downside, as anyone who has ever attempted to lose weight can attest, is that these foods are terrible for any kind of weight management. Unless you are attempting to gain weight, the post-Holidays weigh in is depressing at best. Clothes don’t fit and lethargy sets in. Enter the New Year’s resolutions.

Maintaining a healthy weight, eating healthy foods and moving are vitally important to living a healthy life. However, there is something to be said for quality of life as well, balance is important. After years of trial and error, the way I approach the Holidays is to achieve a balance. To that end, I allow myself to cheat on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve. I don’t track what I eat on those days, and I don’t worry about it. Yes, I will gain weight, every time. Then, I get right back on track the day after, and the weight will come back off. The trick is not to let the one day become one week or one month of cheating.

The other thing I do on my cheat days is to make sure I move. I don’t give myself a day off from exercise. Generally, this means taking a walk or going on a short hike with family and friends. It is refreshing and energizing, and it gives me a chance to get away from the Holiday chaos for a time. If it’s too cold, a morning yoga session is great, you can find yoga online on any number of websites, including YouTube.

Now, go enjoy your Thanksgiving!
